About the albums (Backstorys)Edit
Land Of Hell: Throughout the entirety of their 5 secondary school years, they were physically and mentally abused by them, and as such named their territory "Land Of Hell".
Claustro Ego: Claustro Ego is about when people freed themselves from the torment of being abused from school, trapped in a tiny hole of fear and paranoia, and the only way to get out was rage with all you've got and show your true colors for who you are.
The Encrypt: The Encrypt bases itself upon a fictional asylum in ones dreams based on their deep and dark realities. The only way in is if you've had a terrible life, and the only way out is to fight through them and possess new memories. This gives meaning to a point that no matter what happened in the past, you could make a great present for a brighter future.
Borderlines: Borderlines is a compilation of Onyx Colony's best songs, remastered. Borderlines is about neither Will or Josh being in heaven or hell, but in the middle they ignite once again, so no matter where they were and what joys and sorrows they went into, their harmonies once again in the middle. It also signifies where the end of the line is in any life lesson.
In the times of teenage education, Will Ryan & Joshua Speight had both met up both never knowing each other for the existence of three years of secondary, but when becoming a united force, they realized they had more in common than they though… METAL! So combined with Josh's drumming and Will's Guitar & Vocal passion, they put their heads together to create the first metal core band to appear in the school "Land Of Hell". The band has overdone many different names, and finally ended with a powerful title to name themselves, "Onyx Colony".
Land Of Hell / Self Titled EP (2008)
The name "Land of Hell" came based upon Will's & Josh's school years. Studying at Benton Park School (Rawdon, Leeds, United kingdom), they realized they had a lot in common, one of which was the constant torment they received from various class members. Throughout the entirety of their 5 secondary school years, they were physically and mentally abused by them, and as such named their territory "Land Of Hell". The words sprung onto them in a vast way and that became their band name.
That's when they decided to practice with each other, booking out band rooms and fiddling about as a mock band and making the stupidest music they could. The golden opportunity came for them when they had a school leavers assembly in year 11 (Last year of school). Little did they know, this was short notice and had nothing prepared for the big day. That's when they spent day in and day out making the most structured music they could. Sadly, no inspiration came to them, until the last day before the leavers assembly. Created in half an hour was their first proper song "Wizard of Oz" which currently is one of their higher rated songs, other than "Gone & Forgotten", "Claustro Ego", "We Are Dead Inside" and "Tears Drop To The Ground". When they knew they could create music that fast, it was time to put it into gear, and on their last day of leavers assembly, they played the song and the crowd went wild. Literally this was the one thing that struck them out from anyone else, is that they could make an audience rawer with excitement. Their last song off the Land Of Hell album was "More Fish In The Sea" which to this date is still a crowd pleaser.
The next step for them was to enroll in Leeds College of Music to further expand their knowledge of the music industry. Will Ryan has enrolled onto the technology course to study the fine arts of studio engineering, but little did he know that Josh had also enrolled onto the course, but based himself in the performing arts classes. After convincing Will that the performing arts was more suited for his liking, he swapped courses and joined in with the creative side of music.
The band had never since made any important music for the Land of Hell EP, so they ceased continuation of the project until further notice.
Renaming The Band "Colony", Entrance of Danny Parkinson & Claustro Ego Album, Girlfriends (2008-2010)
And that's when Danny Parkinson had met the group. Despite being in the same school as each other, they never saw eye to eye as much as they thought, until that day. when approached to join the group, Danny replies "… Meh, why not". And henceforth the band decided to evolve into a new name, "Colony". The name change came around when they were no longer in the land of hell that they called school, they had a vast following of people at this point, as if it was a colony of fans, listening to a colony of music, basing upon a colony of albums. Their creative flow eventually came into action and the band officially announced on their MySpace page that they were going to start creating their new album "Claustro Ego". The name comes around from when they freed themselves from the torment of being abused from school, trapped in a tiny hole of fear and paranoia, and the only way to get out was rage with all you've got and show your true colors for who you are.
Their biggest single at that point was in fact "Claustro Ego", and previous unreleased songs like "Forest Of The Beast". Their album spawned incredible hype, as the single "Claustro Ego" had made it's way onto the internet through the famous internet director, Thomas "TomSka" Ridgewell, and from that day the following songs from Claustro Ego were in many of the collaborators films:
Ages Of Pain
This Is Martyr
This was their biggest album to date, and despite it not being a proper release, it was their best one.
Departure of Josh, Change of Romance, Change of lineup & "Onyx Colony" (2009-2010)
In their second year of college, Josh, Will & Danny all had a girlfriend:
Josh: Zoe Coates
Danny: Stephanie Maston
Will: Maxine Breeze
Things were starting to pick up, right up until March 2009, when their first ever major gig rolled up at Leeds Rios, along with Danny's second band, "Fear Incarnate", another hit local band signed my the record label, "Powercut Records", and was their first EP launch, spawning a huge crowd. Since Josh had being with Zoe at this time, she demanded a position as vocalist to replace Will. Needless to say, he wasn't happy, so during the set, Zoe had tried to sing "More Fish In The Sea", but Danny had a better idea and ran up to the technicians and asked to turn her mic down for the song. She was not pleased, but the band was laughing their heads off.
Unfortunately this angered Zoe, but Josh as well, not to mention at that point Josh had never spent a single time of practice what so ever. And that's when through a band meeting that Josh departs from the band. Indeed this was a sad day, but eventually bring the new name "Onyx Colony" which was a play on the older name, but showing they are much stronger, much more resilient and will never stop no matter what.
During this time, not much progress was made with Onyx Colony, and the breakup of Will & Maxine in may had spawned Will to create over 40 songs about the hate he felt. These all became demos for future tracks, and two of them made it into Will's side project created by band mate, Liam Ledger, called "Phoenix Of The Blitz", with their hit song "Time To attack", but only 15 had made it. The band also had a change in lineup, making Danny the drummer in replacement of Josh. Will's romance had changed ever so slightly to "Serenity" then "Caro Smith" then "Emma Kempley" and finally, came the current love of his life "Katie Raw". They had spent more time together than ever before, and the band just came to a sudden halt. Since that day, nobody could even remember the name Onyx Colony. And that's when Danny had teamed up with his good friends to make a new band "Using The Enemy" which gained more than Onyx Colony could.
Will's New Child, Rebirth of Onyx Colony & "The Encrypt" (2010-2011)
Then news suddenly came as a shock when he had impregnated his girlfriend Kate, and nine months later came out with a beautiful girl named "Jessica Ella May Ryan" (25th November 2010). But not too long before Jessica was born, will wanted to remember what he had in his life, and in April, May & June of 2010, the band had played four gigs across Yeadon & Guiseley, the last one being their worst and most recent tour to date. But in September, Will decided it's time for a new leaf in the book of Onyx Colony, and crafted out "The Encrypt".
The Encrypt bases itself upon a fictional asylum in ones dreams based on their deep and dark realities. The only way in is if you've had a terrible life, and the only way out is to fight through them and possess new memories. This gives meaning to a point that no matter what happened in the past, you could make a great present for a brighter future.
The song list went on, and after a whole year of creating nothing, it came as a struggle to compose the albums first tracks, "My Corner" & "Deceived". which were later released as bonus tracks for The Encrypt. since that day it is the most well crafted album to date, but it still didn't quite match "Claustro Ego", however their tracks "Silver Lining" "The Encrypt" & "Gone & Forgotten" were incredible songs to release at that point.
Return of Josh, Inclusion of Ledger, Borderlines EP & Corruption (2011-Present)
It was three years later that Josh and Zoe had broken up, due to the bitch that cheated on him. He aspired to better things, and it wasn't long after that they decided to try again. Crafting out a new album, they entitled it "Borderlines", as neither Will or Josh were in Heaven or Hell, but in the middle they ignited once again, so no matter where they had been and what joys and sorrows they went into, their harmonies united once again in the middle. It also signifies where the end of the line is in any lives lesson.
This is the second album that actually had the best of both The Encrypt & Claustro Ego put together, including a whole new list of songs, making this their heaviest album to date. the making of the album comprised of making the previous albums all Demos, and remastering the greatest songs off of the existence of Onyx Colony to create their very first official album.
A bunch of new songs were made along with the album. No official gig has been put into place for this album and that should be following along in 2012. However, their single "Dear Humanity" had been used in a video made by a famous artist on YouTube, "Eddie Eddache Bowley".
At the end of 2011, bang on New Year, Josh met the greatest woman to ever be in his heart, Chloe Thomlinson. His heart grew and grew and knew she was the one for him that made him happy, and the band members each witnessed with their very eyes true love.
Eventually they decided to go for broke and create a whole new album with no past songs, entitling it "Corruption". and gained way to creating a new YouTube channel named "OnyxColonyOfficial". They knew their whole life during Onyx Colony has become one corrupted world of weird happenings and sad but happy evolution, hence the name "Corruption". But for many others it can be considered a way of telling the worlds highest powers that they have become much more corrupted in this world and feed on the innocent, and the cause of action? Rage through music!
So far the band have two finished songs and two more in the demo positions, but each of these can be found on the Onyx Colony Official YouTube page.
On the 8th September 2012, Liam Ledger (Guitarist & vocalist for "Left By Fear") became a part of the band as the lead guitarist, bringing a new era of Onyx Colony style music. And as of 15th September 2012, Chloe & Josh have split up due to unforeseeable reasons left unknown. Josh is now trying to recover in a depressing state of corruption, whilst Will is trying his best to maintain his strength that he has left. The only things Josh has left on his mind are "I don't know what happened, it was confusing and I just want her back… She changed me like no other woman could, and it's because of her that I still have hope. But I'm not sure what to do now".
After a long time after Onyx Colony was disbanded Will Ryan annouced a bunch of remasters for a bunch of songs from Onyx Colony history, Unfortunately the only song ended up getting remastered was Memories Of The Damned while the other songs faded back into obscurity, One song was in the process of being remastered but will probably never see a completed released.
